ING today announced that it has awarded 60 schools across the U.S. with $2,000 grants to help students combat childhood obesity by getting them more active through school-based running programs. Through its ING Run For Something Better® School Awards Program, financial services leader ING, in partnership with the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), is helping to introduce fourth- through eighth-grade students across the country to the benefits of running and making healthy lifestyle choices. Sixty schools will receive $2,000 in funding to support a minimum of an eight-week running program that will conclude with a culminating running event in celebration of the students' achievements. Preparing to answer growing demand induced by the federal government’s Base Realignment and Closure process, Merritt Properties wraps up the acquisition of a nearly 36-acre site for the development of a 265,900-square-foot office park in Aberdeen, Maryland. The property is located just two miles from the Army’s Aberdeen Proving Ground and approximately 35 miles outside of Baltimore.

The project, Aberdeen Corporate Park, will sit at 635-660 McHenry Road within a designated Harford County Enterprise Zone. The five-structure, Class A complex will consist of two three-story buildings accounting for an aggregate 190,400 square feet of office space, one two-story building featuring 63,500 square feet of office space, two retail pad sites totaling 12,000 square feet and a fitness facility. Merritt plans to obtain LEED Gold certification for the three office buildings.

As a result of the BRAC process, 8,000 new employees will soon call Aberdeen Proving Ground home, and by the time 2015 rolls around, the base will have a bout 22,000 military and civilian workers on site. To accommodate the growth, the Army is investing approximately $1 billion to construct 3 million square feet of office, laboratory and testing space. However, that additional space will not sufficiently meet the needs of the government-related businesses that will grow or materialize in line with the expansion of Aberdeen Proving Ground’s staff.

“The effects of BRAC related growth should begin to be felt, especially the latter part of 2010 into 2011,” according to a midyear report by commercial real estate services firm Cassidy Turley. “Expected demand requires the timely availability of space to accommodate the contractors required to be close to the operations they are serving. Fifty-five percent of the space being built in Harford County has been pre-leased.”

BRAC is also having an impact on the Fort Meade army installation in Hanover County. BRAC will result in the addition of approximately 5,400 military, Defense Department, civilian and contractor employees to the neighboring to the base, not to mention the accompanying 4,900 family members.

So, with BRAC presenting a prime opportunity for developers, the government is not alone in the effort to address impending office demand from both Aberdeen Proving Ground and Fort Meade. Private office endeavors, in addition to Merritt’s Aberdeen Corporate Park, are in the works. The 1.6 million-square-foot Oxford Square, a mixed-use project under development by Preston Partners about sit six miles from Fort Meade, got a financial shot in the arm earlier this month with a capital investment from Canyon-Johnson Urban Funds.

Increased office demand spurred by BRAC will impact other commercial real estate sectors in the area, too. As per the Cassidy Turley report, “Many of the service businesses which will benefit from the spending generated by this activity may also have reason to expand.”

The first office building at Merritt’s Aberdeen Corporate Park is due to deliver in summer 2011.

Paris-based WiThings, the company behind the popular Wi-Fi-enabled body scale, has raised 3 million euros, or roughly $3.8 million, from France’s Ventech, the venture-capital firm said on its website.

The body scale, WiThings’ first product, started shipping June last year and retails for $159 on Amazon.com. Once you weigh yourself, the scale transmits the data over to its servers, enabling you to track your weight overtime using its Web interface or iPhone app, with an option to broadcast it on Twitter for those inclined.

Many people are intensely private about their weight, especially if they struggle with it. But Facebook and Twitter have gotten others accustomed to sharing previously private details. The practice of sharing one’s weight is a component of what some call the “public humiliation diet,” a weight-loss program which enlists one’s friends and sometimes the public at large in keeping a dieter on track. The WiThings scale saves its users the trouble of consciously broadcasting their weight by automating the process.

So far, it’s been a hit with press and users alike. On Amazon, it ranks #514 in the health and personal care category, with 122 customer reviews and an average of 4.5/5. Tech industry veterans Jason Calacanis and Leo Laporte have used the product to announce their weights, as have many others.

The 20-person company, based entirely in Paris, plans to use the financing for the development of two new products, both of which are due in the next six months and likely to be similarly health and technology-related.

High-end discount department store Century 21 is taking over a high-profile space in Lower Manhattan. It will be replacing Barnes & Noble, which will close its location at 1972 Broadway in January 2011.

Century 21 plans to take possession of the space, which is across from Lincoln Center, in February 2011. This will be its second Manhattan location and its seventh metropolitan area location. The space is owned by Millennium Partners and was developed in the early 1990s.

Millennium Partners partner Mario Palumbo said that he believes Century 21 will drive a large volume of shoppers to the area. Moreover, he said other tenants will benefit from the retail traffic.

Millennium was represented by Gene Spiegelman of Cushman & Wakefield. It was the only real estate broker involved in the deal.

Century 21 has additional stores in Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island and New Jersey.

Hall D in San Francisco’s Moscone Center was an electric mecca this week, as tens of thousands of IT professionals gathered to hear VMware Inc. luminaries discuss the future of IT as a Service at the VMworld keynote session. Upbeat music pulsed as the techies took their seats, and three giant screens projected images from a stage so wide that Steve Herrod, VMware’s chief technology officer, used a scooter to get from one side to the other. The slick presentation was theater at its corporate best, replete with relevant props, such as a cubicle warmed by a lava lamp.

This was VMware’s seventh annual shindig, and the statistics ticked off by Rick Jackson, VMware’s chief marketing officer, indicate that virtualization is growing like a popular religion. In 2004, 1,400 people attended the first VMworld conference, and by last year, the number of attendees had risen to 12,500. This year, the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company’s goal was to lure 14,000 attendees, but it was blown away by the registration of 17,000 professionals from 85 countries looking to take advantage of virtualization technologies. And that’s just a fraction of the 195,000 customers worldwide who are engaged with VMware, he said. Customers are banding together in user groups to help each other adopt the technology that will transform their IT initiatives. To date, 50,000 members are involved in VMware user groups across 145 local chapters in 32 countries. This year, the groups inaugurated a board of directors who created a mission statement. Jackson invited attendees to join a local chapter or start a new one.

The theme of this year’s conference was Virtual Roads, Actual Clouds. It’s not about public vs. private, Jackson said: “What people want and need is a hybrid cloud environment.” Last year, VMware built a large private cloud to service its event, but this year, it put its money where its mouth is and built a hybrid cloud using Verizon and Terremark clouds on the East Coast connected via the Internet to a cloud in San Francisco. This platform provisioned 4,000 virtual machines an hour during the conference, for an expected total of 100,000 VMs.

The road to a hybrid cloud is a three-phase journey. In the first phase of virtualization — what VMware calls IT production — customers are averaging savings of 50% to 60% in capital expenditures, according to Jackson. The second phase, referred to as business production, is driven by quality of service with high availability and disaster recovery at a fraction of traditional costs. The average VMware customer is in this phase, he said. The third phase is the optimization of IT production for business consumption, which is the premise of IT as a Service. The goal is to quickly deliver business value. “The value proposition from Phase 3 of the journey significantly dwarfs phases 1 and 2,” Jackson said.

In 2009, IDC reported that the number of applications delivered on virtualized infrastructures exceeded those on physical hosts. “We are at a tipping point in the industry,” said Paul Maritz, VMware president and CEO. The tide is coming whether VMware is there or not, he said, predicting that in 2010, more than 10 million virtualized machines will be deployed, growing at 28% annually. The trend is evident in industries ranging from pharmaceuticals to fashion, and spans the globe from dairy farms in India to large breweries in Eastern Europe, “to Tastykakes in Pennsylvania, which delivers satisfaction on top of a virtualized infrastructure,” Maritz said.

Two notable challenges are the integration of Software as a Service (SaaS) apps and mobile devices that have made their way uninvited into the corporate IT environment. It even happens at VMware: The company is using 15 SaaS apps that do not share single sign-on status. “I didn’t approve a single one of them,” Maritz said. Meanwhile there is an increasing heterogeneity of such devices as iPads that IT will have to support. “Ultimately, IT is going to be left holding the bag. Just as the PC came into the environment uninvited, IT will have to stitch them together in a manageable environment,” he said. What’s needed are automation, management and integrated security to make hybrid clouds a reality. The holy grail of porting data from one cloud to another will depend on faithful, open standards.
